Assessment Qualification Levels
Write a scenario as a Mental Health Counselor in New York State. Review the qualification levels for the use of psychological assessment presented in Naugle’s article “Counseling and Testing” in this unit’s study activity. Compare these qualifications to New York state laws or rules in Mental Health Counseling to determine your qualification level, and describe what type of assessments you may be qualified to administer with appropriate training and supervision after you are licensed New York State. As a licensed or certified counselor in Mental Health Counseling, which level will you qualify under in New York State, and what do training and supervision entail for Level A, B, and C tests?
Testing practices and assessments are administered by trained professionals to determine the score and interpret results. Also, assessments are used to measure the human constructs in the counseling field. Constructs such as self-esteem, intelligence, and personality cannot always be evaluated by interview and observation alone. Therefore, counselors have to perform other forms of assessment to collect valuable data. The data can get used to define, evaluate and diagnose the client’s problem. The levels of competency include Levels A, B, C, and Q. Level A requires basic qualifications such as the individual must be of good character, must be 21 years of age, and must meet the education and examination requirements (Naugle,2009). Level B requires the individual to possess a master’s degree in psychology or education. Level C requires the individual to have a doctorate in the psychology fields while level Q requires one to specify a background relative to the testing purchase. All the levels require the individual to have the appropriate training and experience in counseling assessment.
The basic requirement to be a licensed counselor in New York includes good moral charter, complete coursework training, meet examination requirements and experience requirements. The license requires one to pay a fee for the first registration (Smith and Robinson,2015). As a mental health counselor, I will be qualified to administer Level b requirements because I possess the educational requirements such as a master’s degree in psychology. Also, I have the appropriate training in the assessment as mandated by the guidelines. I will be required to pay a fee of $371 for the first registration.
